The Leftovers. - Episode 3: Finding Nate D.

Marcus, Vicky and Steph were all boarding a plane from Brisbane to Texas.

“What makes you so sure Nate still lives in Texas?” asked Vicky. “Did you do any research?”

“Didn’t need to.” replied Marcus. “I mean…it’s Nate. He couldn’t be bothered moving, could he?”

“Good point.” laughed Vicky. They all sat down. “I bet Nate hasn’t changed a bit…he’s probably still a drunken idiot.”

“Yeah, but he’s still hot!” said Steph.

“Ew.” said Marcus. “I may be allowed to see MA-rated movies now, but that doesn’t mean I want the live show, Steph. Please don’t flirt with Nate when we get there!”

“Oh, fine!” snapped Steph.


After a very long flight, the group had made it to Texas. “So how do we figure out where he lives?” asked Vicky.

Steph walked over to a gift shop, and brought an address book. “What kind of a tourist would buy an address book as a souvenir?” she asked.

Marcus shrugged. “Look for anyone named Nate.”

“There are a million Nates.” she said. “We need his last name.”

“Uhh…” said Marcus. “I…don’t really know his last name.”

“Oh god…” said Steph. “Do you, Vicky?”

“I think it was Chelvoloti.” replied Vicky.

Marcus and Steph stared at her. “No you don’t.” said Marcus.

“Yeah, okay, I don’t.” Vicky said, embarrassed. “But…it could be, ya never know.”

“Wait!” said Marcus suddenly. “I think it started with a D!”

“Yeah, you’re right!” said Steph. “Well, this should narrow it down a bit.”


The three of them all split up looking for the right ‘Nate D’.

“Hello.” said Marcus. “Is this Nate D from LVI?”

“Nope.” replied a man with a weird little beard. “It’s Nate D from Get-the-hell-outta-here!”

“That’s not a place.” replied Marcus. “It’s a sentence.”

“You trying to give me a lesson on grammar?” asked the man.

“No, sir…” said Marcus. “I just don’t believe that there’s a place called Get-the-hell-outta-here…you were joking, right?”

The man shook his head and pointed towards a sign at the end of his street. “Get-the-hell-outta-here” it said in big letters.

“Right…” said Marcus.


“Hey, is this Nate D from LVI?” asked Steph.

“No.” replied a man. “Are you that girl from the ads for pizza hut?”

“Err…no.” said Steph, confused.

“Get me my pizza, woman!” snapped the man.

“Look, I’m just here to--” began Steph.

“I WANT MY PIZZA!” yelled the insane man. Steph ran off down the street.


“Hi.” said Vicky. A woman answered the door. “Does Nate D from LVI live here?”

“No.” replied the woman.

“Oh.” said Vicky.

“He doesn’t live here anymore.” said the woman, looking sad.

“Oh…where does he live?” asked Vicky.


Vicky, Marcus and Steph all stood in a graveyard. “He’s…dead?” asked Marcus.

Steph cried on Vicky’s shoulder, who was also crying. Marcus tried to hold it back, but cried too.

“How’d he die?” asked Marcus.

“The woman didn’t say.” replied Vicky, wiping her eyes. “She just told me I could find him here…she didn’t mention it was a graveyard.”

Suddenly a man’s hand came down on Steph’s shoulder. “AHH!” she screamed.

“Hey, don’t scream!” said the man, taking off his sunglasses. “It’s Jessie…Nate’s brother.”

Steph turned around. “Jessie?” asked Steph. “Oh my god, what happened to Nate? How’d he die?”

“He didn’t die.” replied Jessie.

“Umm, hello?” said Marcus, pointing towards Nate’s grave.

“It’s a fake…inside it is a man named Cheech.” said Jessie. He lowered his voice and the group leaned in. “Nate’s faked his own death.”

“What?” whispered Vicky. “Why?”

“He got into some gambling troubles…” Jessie whispered back. “He bet two million dollars in a polka game in Vegas. Trouble is, he didn’t have two million dollars…and he lost.”

“Oh, that idiot!” said Steph angrily.

“He’s in hiding now.” continued Jessie. “He’s changed his name, and now lives in a small country town nearby here called Kentville.”

“What’d he change his name to?” asked Marcus.

“Err…” said Jessie. “Rudiger Symons.”

Marcus burst into laughter. “Marcus!” said Vicky. “It’s not a laughing matter! This is serious!”

“I can take you guys there…” said Jessie. “But you have to promise not to tell anyone, and I mean anyone.”

“Sure, we promise.” said Steph. “Come on, take us there!”

It took two days to travel to the ugly little town that was Kentville, but they had to get there. Finally they had made it, and Jessie drove into a garage next to an ugly brown house.

Jessie walked up to the door. There were seven locks on there. He got out a big batch of keys all tied on a string, and opened each one. “Hey, Nate...err, I mean, Rudiger!” said Jessie. “It’s just me!”

The group walked into the little room. At first it seemed Nate wasn’t there, but then they noticed a scared 43-year old man sitting in the corner. “Who are they?” he said quickly, shaking.

“These are your friends, Steph, Marcus and Vicky…” said Jessie. “Remember? From LVI?”

“And you just let them in here?” asked Nate angrily. “How do you know they aren’t working for those gamblers?”

“Nate, we’re here to get you to spam again!” said Marcus.

“Ha! You wish, Marci!” said Nate. “I’m not gonna do anything ever again!”

“You’re not gonna do anything at all?” asked Steph.

“Doing stuff only gets you in trouble.” said Nate. “All I need to do is eat, sleep and breathe.”

“Nate, the only thing that got you in trouble was drinking all that beer!” said Vicky.

“Well, it’s a good thing I’ve given that up then!” said Nate.

“What?!?” asked Marcus. “You…you, Nate from LVI…gave up drinking?”

“What?!?” asked Steph.

“What?!?” asked Vicky.

“Get the hell outta here!” yelled Nate, and he threw a vase at them. They all quickly ran out.


“Ya know, I’ve been to a street named ‘Get-the-hell-outta-here’.” said Marcus. “Lovely place.”

“What are we supposed to do?” asked Vicky.

“We’ll think of something…” said Steph. She scratched her chin.
